Robots are very popular, and the field of robotics has captured the imagination of millions of people who grew up thinking they might see something like a full blown android during their lifetimes. While that still could very well be the case for many, most of the groundbreaking work in robotics has so far been done to assist the manufacturing and medical fields.
Robots are fascinating works of science and can do many specialized tasks that are impossible, or too dangerous, for humans to accomplish. Since robots are machines, there is no danger of them being injured while handling poisonous substances or those that could infect humans with deadly viruses or bacteria. Also, robots can be fitted with extendable tools that are small enough to handle microscopic tasks with precision – something our large and clumsy human hands cannot reliably do.
